Private Time Reflections

 End Of Program?

“Will plastic be alright?
It was our time to stock the pantry and the freezer so, this was the big one! The shopper ahead was already pushed through the scanner but, they had evidently encountered some other difficulty because everything was stopped except the always helpful animated hand motion. I located myself beside the full cart at the customer end of an empty conveyor belt and started unpacking. I placed the first items as far in front of me as I could reach on the empty belt to take advantage of all the room I could. Suddenly, for no sound reason, the checkout stepped on the “belt ahead” button and moved my tiny hand full of groceries and my empty belt space smack slammer against the scanner, way out of reach. Now I’m back to available empty conveyor belt space only as far as I can reach until the ensuing problem is solved. I decided to unpack and carefully stack my groceries like a farmer stacks hay bales to get them all into the barn. I was nearly finished when the finger was pulled out of the dike and things started to flow again.
“Will plastic be alright?”
“Yes, plastic is fine but, please don’t put more than one glass container in the same bag.”
When I finished the transaction I noticed all my groceries, except those in glass containers, had been put into plastic bags and were back in my cart ready to be pushed out to our vehicle.
Here was this covey of glass bottles and jars scrunched together on the exit side of the scanner, all tucked away inside the confusion of the bagger. I could almost read his “Ok, this is what you got, now what?”
I’m sure he was programmed to do his job correctly but, do you suppose I nudged him right past the end of the program?
